Towards Integrated and Sustainable Ports in Africa

A new integrated approach to port design that is stakeholder-inclusive and encompasses engineering, ecological, economic and governance aspects will be described and illustrated using the Port of Tema in Ghana. Next, examples of nature-based engineering elsewhere in the world, and experiences with port management in an African context will be highlighted in the following presentations:

1- Sustainable Ports in Africa – TU Delft

2- A Stakeholder-inclusive Approach to Port Sustainability – TU Delft

3- An Ecosystem-based Engineering Framework for Port Planning and Design – TU Delft

4- International experiences in Building with Nature in Port Development – Royal Boskalis

5- Experiences with Port Management in an African Context – Port of Amsterdam

The dilemmas associated with sustainable ports in Africa revealed in the presentations will be discussed with the workshop participants. The most promising strategies towards sustainability in ports will be identified by voting.
